「夢路より」 日本語訳詞 津川 主一 フォスター作曲
原曲：”Beautiful dreamer“ (1864) Stephen Collins Foster 1826-1864
アメリカの音楽の父と言われるフォスターの遺作です。
若いころには次々とヒット曲を発表し、早くして作曲家としての絶頂期を迎えていたフォスターでした。
代表作としては：

１８５０年「草競馬<Camptown Races>」
１８５１年「故郷の人々（スワニー河）<Old
Folks at Home>」

１８５４年「金髪のジェニー<Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair>」などがあります。
ところが、３０代になったフォスターは、２０代半ばのような創作能力がなくなり、
妻子とも別れ、ニューヨークの安宿で毎晩飲んだくれた堕落の生活を
送っていたとされています。そんなすさんだ生活を送っていた１８６４年のある日、
不幸なことに彼は洗面台に頭を打って大量出血し、病院で手当てを受けた甲斐もなく、
37才でその短い生涯を閉じてしまいます。
遺作となった「夢路より（夢見る人）」は、そんな堕落した天才の本来の力を
不思議なぐらい示している曲ですが、なにか、自分自身の厳しい現実から逃避しようとする中で、
美しい夢の世界を歌に託した、最後のひらめき、インスピレーションだったのではないかと思います。
津川 主一さんの日本語訳詞は、原曲の歌詞をかなり忠実に日本語に訳した、
大変優れた作品だと思います。「いとしのモリー」のような心配は要りませんね！
