MJO  The Moonlight JAZZ Orchestra is one of the Japanese amateur Big Band that was formed in 1979 by a group of jazz enthusiasts in Nonoichi, Japan.
 Scince 1995, the band has co-produced the "Big Apple in Nonoichi" with the city of Nonoichi.
A major local jazz event every fall, the "Big Apple in Nonoichi" has brought such American jazz musicians as Barry Harris, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster,
MJOJunior Mance, and Toshiko Akiyoshi, etc. to conduct workshops for local amateur musicians and to perform with the orchestra.
Last fall(2006), Clayton Brothers were featured guest artist.

  MJO made its first appearance in the United States in 1990 at the Monterey Jazz Festival, CA.
In 1994, on its second U.S. tour, the orchestra visited the New School in N.Y. to perform and participate in music workshops
MJOand clinics.   In 2000, the orchestra invited to "SAKURA Festival" and paerformed at The Kennedy Center in Washington,D.C.
An ongoing relationship developed between the two organizations, and New School musicians were invited to perform at the "Big Apple in Nonoichi".
  MJO continues to serve as local jazz educators in Japan, creating oppotunities for children and local amateur musicians to be exposed to the "breath of Jazz".
